TDC SPRING RECITAL 30TH ANNIVERSARY

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of The Dance Company, Flagler students are tasked with designing an anniversary logo to celebrate the business benchmark. This logo will be in circulation for the remainder of the year on various promotional items and may be reproduced into keychains. In addition, The Dance Company has a large scale recital this May titled, Greatest Hits. The reminder of the design components revolve around this event. A Greatest Hits event logo will appear on a performance poster, playbill, and t shirt. The target audience for this project could be split into two main categories: senior citizens and family members of dancers. The senior citizens like to visit the Lewis Auditorium to watch a performance so it does not necessarily mean dance recitals and could extend to other theatrical or percussion performances as well. The other main audience includes the family members of dancers; this spans all age groups and walks of life. All of these people will come together to celebrate the 30 year accomplishment and the Spring Recital. The Dance Company’s 30th anniversary showcases the best of the best. You cannot stay in business for 30 years in the competitive world of dance if you can not keep up and or beat the surrounding studios. It’s The Dance Company’s year to shine and showcase their greatest hits to the greatest music hits throughout the ages. It’s time to combine thirty years worth of glory days into one night.
The process of designing a composition led to Brazilian performance posters. The compactness of an ensemble of dancing objects lended nicely to the vertical alignment of the piece. A clear center stage with a strong focal point in the middle of the design. It created a clear cluster of fun for a viewer to stop, pause, and take it all in. The client wished for a color scheme that leaned more pastel in order to stand out from their most recent recital promotional items. Having more simple vector objects in the pastel color scheme did not pose a strong design solution so at that step, texture was explored farther. More painterly textures like gauche were explored but a texture leaning more colored pencil was found to be the most harmonious. This decision was guided by comparing Anna Hard’s and Rebecca Greenwood’s work. One could call colored pencils the ballet dancers of the art world. Using a point, the pencil dances across the page with style and precision. Colored pencils hold a whimsical element of childhood, and for many girls, childhood is synonymous with ballet. The pencil gives passerbies an idea of the main age group, children under 18, who will be performing without having to add additional type to the composition. The materials in the final output further this message. The poster and brochure will be printed on semi-glossy paper, which of course, paper is used as a canvas for colored pencil. Then a nice cotton shirt is suitable for all the different walks of life either attending or performing in the event.
